Adaptogens: What Are They and Should I Use Them?

We’re sure many of you would’ve heard the term adaptogen floating around the ‘wellness’ world over the past few years, but what does this word actually mean?

‘Adaptogens', refer to medical mushrooms, herbs, spices or tinctures that are used to treat symptoms or help prevent illness[1]. They do this by helping our bodies adapt to stressful situations and maintain normal body functions. Adaptogens work at a molecular level to regulate and balance energy and stress levels by normalising and calming the body and reducing over stimulation.

The benefits of adaptogens extend far beyond physical benefits, having also proven to benefit the body’s chemical and biological needs, such as stress management, reduced inflammation, improved mental wellbeing, increased physical performance, regulated blood sugar levels and strengthened immune systems.

Despite the myriad of adaptogens available on the market, we’ve narrowed down some of our favourites, as well as their outstanding benefits:

  • Chaga: increases energy + balances stress
  • Reishi: enhances mood + supports concentration
  • Ginseng: regulates blood sugar levels
  • Tulsi: protects skin
  • Ashwagandha: stress and anxiety management
