Vegan Hot Cross Scones

Makes 6 scones | Vegan  | Under 30 minutes


  • 350g self-raising flour (wholemeal if you'd like)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp coconut sugar 
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, ground 
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg, ground 
  • 50g sultanas or raisins 
  • 1/4 tsp salt 
  • 95g vegan butter 
  • 150g milk of choice, plus additional to glaze 


Step 1: Preheat oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with paper. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, coconut sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the sultanas and gently combine.

Step 2: Gradually stir the milk into the dry ingredients until it begins to come together, then use your hands to shape into a smooth ball.

Step 3: Lightly dust a clean surface with flour and gently roll the dough until ~2.5 cm thick. Using a 6 cm cutter, cut out individual scones and transfer to your lined baking tray. Brush with additional milk and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden.

Step 4: Once cooled, melt the chocolate over low heat and gently paint an 'X' over each bun.
